Sailor Hector: New Tune and Dance
Celebrate Red Springs Founder
The North Carolina-based Flora Macdonald Legacy Foundation announced this week that a new tune and dance have been created and will be featured on the Flora Macdonald Ball program in October of this year in Red Springs, NC. The tune "Sailor Hector" is composed by renowned Scottish fiddler John Turner and a dance to the air has been devised by Richmond-based Scottish country dance instructors Stella Fogg and Moira Turner. The tune "Sailor Hector" -- which is of course a hornpipe -- honors the founder of Red Springs; "Sailor" Hector McNeill, who was one of the first Scots to settle in the Cape Fear Region of the Carolinas. The Flora Macdonald Ball is being held in conjunction with the Flora Macdonald Highland Games on October 7th in Red Springs, and will feature Dave Wiesler at the Piano and Mara Shea on fiddle.
