What is Scottish Country Dancing?

Scottish Country Dance is the traditional social dance of Scotland. The dances are generally danced in lines and the music ranges from energetic reels and jigs to the strathspey - a form of music found only in Scotland.

Country Dance was popular in England in the 17th century and was probably first danced in Scotland in the very early years of the 18th century.  This dance form soon began to develop it's own unique "Scottish flavor". Scottish country dancing is highly sociable and fun and it is this very quality which attracts people of all nationalities and why you can find Scottish country dance groups around the world.  While some Scottish country dances on the Flora Macdonald Ball program require experience and a certain level of expertise, others are more basic and will be taught for the benefit of beginners and those with little or no experience. If interested in learning the more complicated Scottish country dances, we encourage you to join one of the Scottish country dance groups in the Raleigh/Durham area.  There has been talk of trying to start a group in Laurinburg!  Please see links to Scottish country dance groups on the “Dance Groups” tab at left.
